Grace hasn't been the same since the death of her best friend Charlie. She is haunted by Charlie's last words, and in a bid for answers, opens an old memory box of Charlie's. It soon becomes clear there was a lot she didn't know about her best friend.
When Grace starts a campaign to find Charlie's father, Anna, a girl claiming to be Charlie's sister steps forward. For Grace, finding Anna is like finding a new family, and soon Anna has made herself very comfortable in Grace and boyfriend Dan's home.
But something isn't right. Things disappear, Dan's acting strangely and Grace is sure that someone is following her. Is it all in Grace's mind? Or as she gets closer to discovering the truth about both Charlie and Anna, is Grace in terrible danger?
There was nothing she could have done to save Charlie ...or was there?
Told in a "Then" and "Now" format we learn about Grace and Charlie, childhood BFFs. We find out right off the bat that Charlie has died and Grace is understandably inconsolable. Grace decides to dig up a memory box the girls buried when they were teenagers. It takes Grace some time to be able to open the box but when she does she discovers a note from Charlie to try to find Charlie's father (a man that Charlie has never met).
Grace tries to cope with all of this with no help from her jerky, live in boyfriend Dan. She also reaches out to Charlie's mom Lexie, who is a miserable drunk. Enter Anna, Charlie's half-sister. Grace misses Charlie so much that she loses her mind and decides to ask Anna to move in. Stuff goes down, its pretty bad. Grace is dumb, Anna is evil, Dan is useless and Lexie is drunk.
Brace yourself for this one... Useless Dan banged Anna (nice huh) and she blackmailed him into letting her move in! Anna is EVIL and basically a bunny boiling psychopath who is Charlie's twin sister. Sure lets pull a twin out of thin air to make it all make sense. Lexie couldn't handle both girls so she gave Anna up and raised Charlie. Charlie was young and believed Anna to be an imaginary friend. Charlie died running (she had a medical condition) well it turns out Anna tried to be normal, was married with a child. She lost her child (similar condition as Charlie) and husband and her mind and decided to make her mom Lexie and her dead twin's BFF Grace pay, sure. Lexie and Grace end up cuffed together in a bed, again sure, Lexie is drunk and Grace is useless. In the end Anna ends up in a mental facility and we are left to find out that Lexie ends up having a relationship with her psychopath abandoned daughter.
This one is tough, I have to give the author credit because the "then" and "now" narration really worked. She was able to build suspense and made the book feel exciting throughout. Its just the twin thing that bothers me. A magically appearing twin? Really? I think it would have been better if Charlie ended up being evil or if useless Dan had killed her, sick I know, just a more interesting story line.
