Gone Girl

By Gillian Flynn

My Rating: Bring this on!

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

Happy Anniversary Nick and Amy Dunne, aww such a happy couple (gasp!). The book sets out to help us get to know the couple by switching between Amy's perspective and Nick's perspective.  And how differently things look from each point-of-view. It is the love story between a narcissist and a sociopath, but we will get to that. Amy is laid out to us mostly by her journal entries and Nick talks to us in the present.

So basically Nick and Amy are living in New York and both lose their jobs due to the economy.  They end up moving back to Nick's hometown in Missouri, where Nick ends up opening a bar with his sister, using the last of Amy's trust fund (Amy's parents wrote a series of Amazing Amy books that were wildly popular early on).

Crap goes down! Amy disappears on the morning of their anniversary and guess who the suspect is? Oh poor narcissistic Nick. Turns out he has some secrets, but what the heck happened? Its so twisty and spoilery (yes I made that up) from here that I am going to go right into the spoilers.  Oh yeah its good.....

Basically Nick and Amy are both liars, and I love it. You can't trust them as they lie throughout their narration! So here is the good stuff... Nick is having an affair with a student (that always works out really well) oh yeah and Amy is ALIVE! That crazy b faked her own death and planned it out to an obsessive detail.  I believe I said "holy crap" about a thousand times when she went over the details of how she staged her kidnapping and possible murder! That b thought of everything including faking a reaction to blood so she couldn't possibly have cut herself right? My gosh she is good! Even the diary, the diary that we have been learning all about what an a hole Nick is, it is a fake! She spent so much time putting in entries and dates and stories that all point to Nick wanting to kill her.  Again she is good.

So Nick has to get a lawyer, Tanner Bolt, to help him get a better public image so he has a chance to not be convicted.  Nick has to go searching and finds out crazy Amy has really messed with people in the past.  One such person is Desi Collins, her high school boyfriend who has never fallen out of love with Amy. Poor bastard took her in and everything - she claimed Nick was abusive and she had to run, sure. Well Amy, being such a sweetheart kills Desi and pins everything on him when she gets bored playing dead and decides to go back to Nick.

Oh yeah, the b faked a pregnancy too! She stole a pregnant neighbors pee and had it confirmed on record at a doctor, so the public would think Nick killed his pregnant wife on their anniversary.  She's a peach.   Anyway she came back home to Nick, claiming to have escaped Desi and to have lost the baby during the ordeal. Nick knows she is full of it and gets her to confess everything, but she is really smart so the confession happens in the shower where no wires could be worn and no voices could be heard.  Nick can't hurt her because all eyes are on him since his wife came home.

Nick decides he is going to expose everything Amy has done and writes it all out in a memoir from hell.  Well guess what, Amy planned for that and got herself all knocked up using Nick's frozen sperm from when they were supposedly trying to get pregnant earlier in the marriage (she didn't actually want a kid, just a way to mess with Nick). So Nick deletes the book and decides to stay with Amy for his unborn babies sake.  Um holy crap.

My Thoughts:

This is 432 pages of awesome.  Ok the last few bugged me a little but I can still say the story was really good and really intense.  Loved this book and have read it several times.  I also highly recommend the audio book because the narrators really draw you into the story. Yes the ending was annoying but not enough to detract from the power of the book.  I think these two are just sick enough for each other.
